Bloomin’ Onion.
Chicago’s Studio Gang has unveiled the dramatic design for a proposed 36-story apartment building in midtown St. Louis that looks, to me at least, like a bloomin’ onion.
The tasty yet unhealthy 1,954-calorie Outback Steakhouse appetizer bears a similar leaflike appearance to Studio Gang’s first St. Louis skyscraper. Englewood, New Jersey-based Mac Properties is the developer. The $130 million project is expected to be completed in 2019.
Each of the 305 apartments in the One Hundred is designed to give its residents wide views of Forest Park to the west and the Gateway Arch to the east. One location that won’t be visible from west-facing apartments is the closest Outback Steakhouse on South Lindbergh Boulevard in suburban South St. Louis County.
According to the architecture firm, each apartment will have a corner living room to increase the amount of interior daylight. The building facade of angled glass is intended to enhance residents’ views and to save energy.
During a community meeting last night in St. Louis’ Central West End neighborhood, most residents welcomed the Onion — er, I mean, the One Hundred — even though the design is a significant departure from most other architecture in the neighborhood, especially the Art Deco Chase Park Plaza residential tower a couple of blocks to the north.
